When it comes to massive online first person shooter games, no franchise has come close to the level of teamwork, variety, and scale that the Battlefield games have put on the shelves. Quite frankly, if you want a great experience that requires tight teamwork, intense combat, and huge maps from a variety of locations, then the Battlefield franchise is for you.
Over the years the Battlefield franchise has gone in many directions. World War II, the Vietnam War, and even modern day combat have been covered by this now legendary series of games. So it comes as no surprise that the latest installment is going to take the Battlefield franchise into the future with: Battlefield 2142.
Seeing the playable demo at E3, and now the Beta form online, there are quite a lot of new additions to the Battlefield system since it's debut. At the same time there is a lot of retention of all the formulas that have proved successful for the series. So far, Battlefield 2142 does indeed feel like a new game, but it has certain familiarities that drive the franchises standards higher and higher. Those who know Battlefield 2 inside and out will obviously pick up on the similarities, more so than the average gamer. Battlefield 2142 is turning out to be a blast to play and the fans and newcomers alike will be amazed.
Battlefield games are never known for their stories, and since all the previous Battlefield titles were based on wars, we all knew that the need for a deep narrative really wasn’t applicable. All players needed to know was: the opposing team was trying to win the war for their side. Battlefield 2142 is a little different. Since it takes place in the future, EA now had a chance to add a compelling back-story. It seems that the setting of distant future has some realistic variables, for instance: the glaciers have moved further south, further than anyone expected and has covered countries like Canada and parts of Russia. The remaining lands with a suitable climate are sparse. In the aftermath of this global catastrophe two major powers emerged, and each is vying for control of the remaining “continents”. The European Union and Pan Asian Coalition are the dominant armies and are outfitted with some of the latest technology. One of these technological terrors is the Titan; which is a central component to the new gameplay formula Battlefield 2142 is touting.
