Back in the earlier days of PC gaming there was one series that captured the minds and hearts of RPG lovers across the globe. If it wasn’t the spectacular 3D graphics (at the time they were amazing) that sold you, or the adaptation of a past time which could finally be experienced in a streamlined manner (Dungeon and Dragon’s rules), then the toolset that allowed players to create their own detail adventures would. I’m talking of the legendary Neverwinter Nights franchise from RPG masters Bioware. While countless expansion packs and incredible user created content has kept the series alive all these years (people still play it today), fans have been craving an official sequel from the Bioware camp. Fans only have to wait a few more weeks since the true follow-up to the Neverwinter Nights series; Neverwinter Nights 2 is set to be released on October 17th, 2006.
Like all past Neverwinter Nights titles, NWN2’s gameplay is based entirely on the rules from the pen and paper RPG game, Dungeons and Dragons. The Dungeon and Dragons rules are now within their latest update with version 3.5 being released a few years ago. As a result of this, NWN2 will be one of the few games to take full advantage of these new “tweaks” to the D&D system. Mostly, the fixes to the rules have been to create a more balanced gameplay experience. These center around making sure certain classes are more evenhanded and changing tiny aspects of magic spells are to have them either behave more realistically or power down some rather deadly combos. It is going to be nice to see the 3.5 rules in effect since the general consensus of many players in the D&D camp is that the update was needed.
As with any new RPG from the Bioware camp, the question of whether there will be new races of new prestige classes always comes up. NWN2 is no exception with the promise of several new races as well as a few new prestige classes. So far the only “new” prestige class confirmed is the Warlock. Warlocks are a magic heavy prestige class and look to have some interesting class specific abilities and spells. As for new races, all we know is that there will be several in NWN2. What these new races will be and what their specific strengths and weaknesses will entail is still under lock and key. We can confirm the human race, but this is almost a given.
