It is without a doubt that the Battlefield franchise is one of the stronger PC lineages. Spawning multiple titles across multiple war fronts, gamers have been given the opportunity to not only fight in World War II, but also Vietnam and even modern day warfare. In addition to these official titles there have been countless mods for Battlefield, with some of them being very well made. But there comes a problem with all this content. Eventually, the wars are going to get old and new locations, and new eras are required to keep the Battlefield franchise fresh, which EA has done in a very predictable way. Battlefield 2142 takes the Battlefield franchise into the distant future where land is scarce and war is abundant. Battlefield 2142 has made some changes to the typical Battlefield system in order to streamline the experience and also encourage and reward players who play BF 2142 for an extended period of time. Is it the best Battlefield out there? In some ways yes. In other ways no.

One thing I find very hard to do is to call BF 2142 a new game, because it sure doesn’t feel like it. Despite the few new game features, including Titan Mode, and the changes EA has made to the Battlefield formula, BF 2142 feels like an incredibly well made mod at best (or could it be a moderately well made game?). Veterans of the Battlefield series are going to feel cheated here, because for around sixty bucks one would think they would get a little more bang for their buck than what BF 2142 is offering.

There are two main game modes in 2142, Conquest and Titan Mode. Conquest is the original game type which has made Battlefield such a hit. Two teams (the EU Europeans or PAC Russians) vie for control of strategically placed control points across the map. Each team has a variety of tactics, vehicles, and solider classes to use to accomplish their goal. Is this mode still fun to play? Yes, it certainly is. The novelty of trying out new vehicles and weapons in a new battleground will seem cool at first. However, after a while Conquest does start to get old. By all means it should. This is the same game type we have been experiencing since Battlefield 1942 and one would expect it to eventually grow tiresome no matter what era the war is being fought in. Luckily for us, though, EA realized this and included a second game type, Titan Mode.

Think of Titan Mode as Conquest on steroids. Yes, gamers are still going to have to capture points on the map, but this is now only a small part in a much larger goal. To win in Titan Mode two teams attempt to destroy the other’s Titan. The Titan is a floating fortress, which is armed to the teeth, and is the main spawn point for either faction. They look awesome when playing the game, a clear reminder of what the player is defending or attacking. One nice aspect about the Titan is it can defend itself. Gamers can take control of a good number of turrets which not only dish out a lot of hurt but prevent the opposing team from spawn camping. Seems like EA got this problem out of the way.

To bring down this floating fortress teams must capture missile silos scattered around the map. Claim a silo and it begins to periodically fire missiles at the opposing team’s Titan, slowly draining the Titan’s shields. Obviously, whoever controls the majority of the silos will ultimately bring down the shields faster. Once the shields are down gamers then board the Titan and attempt to place explosives on key points within the Titan in order to ultimately destroy it. The onboard combat is a nice change of pace since the Titan is compact and there is very little room to fight. Lay down the right amount of explosives before the other team and victory is complete. Titan Mode is a blast to play, and goes to show that the Battlfield idea can be used in unique and fun ways. The battles can get intense and frantic as both teams attack and defend Titans at the same time. For die-hard Battlefield fans this alone is worth the sixty dollars. It is just too bad that every other aspect of Battlefield waters down the Titan Mode experience.
